Introducing Lakeland Chiropractor Dr. Scottie Ison

Dr. Scottie M. IsonAs a chiropractor, I have always prayed to be used of God. The first time a patient said, "Dr. Ison, I think the Lord really used you to heal me," tears of joy filled my eyes. Similarly, my choice to follow a career in chiropractic is affirmed many times every day.

Why did I choose chiropractic? Since I was a small child, I was always attracted to work in the medical field. Maybe it was the subtle urging that was ever-present from my mother. Maybe it was a desire to help my mother who was always seemed bothered with back pain.

Born in West Liberty, Kentucky, my preparation for a career in chiropractic began when I moved from Highland, Indiana to Lakeland, Florida with my parents in 1970. I attended Kathleen High School and was granted early full-time admission to Polk Community College in Winter Haven. After completing an A.A. degree, I attended Florida Southern College in Lakeland, where I graduated in 1976 with a B.S. in psychology. I also studied the basic sciences such as inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, biology, and physiology.

After careful consideration, I then applied to National University of Health Sciences (then called National College of Chiropractic) in Lombard, Illinois (a western Chicago suburb). Five academic years of study at National included biochemistry, a major emphasis on anatomy and human physiology, x-ray, diagnosis, chiropractic adjusting techniques and patient care in the Lombard Clinic. To avoid any more Chicago winters than necessary, I attended school year-round. I graduated in December of 1979 and returned to Lakeland to establish what is now known as the Cleveland Heights Chiropractic Clinic.

I married Maryclaire Maltese, my soul mate, in 1981. She is also my office manager.

Many patients concur with my youngest of three sons who first said that the Cleveland Heights Chiropractic Clinic is "conveniently located in South Lakeland but worth the trip from anywhere." This probably emerged from something my Dad used to say. He used to say that I wasn’t the best chiropractor in the world but the best was no better. (We quote my Dad a lot!)

If you have a fever, are you sick or healthy?
